Social politics
For our exhibition we aim to turn a mirror to our lives and the way we live and ask the viewer to re-evaluate and interrogate themselves, even question the way they live and the opinions they have.
The topic we are focusing on is waste within our lives, cultural identity, money and consumption and the way society sees it.

The Nucleus Arts Chatham Gallery

We have chosen ‘The Nucleus Arts Gallery’  as the venue for our exhibition. A large factor of our decision was the location. The gallery is located in Chatham high street. The audience we are trying to attract are not necessarily art enthusiasts, but the general public as we are trying to encourage self reflection on their attitudes concerning each of our topics. By having the exhibition in such a regular and busy public area it will draw in our intended audience.

The floor was a feature that really inspired us when visiting the venue. The floors are reflective which make a small space appear to be twice as large, The light are reflected making the room brighter and is also fitting with our idea of making the audience self reflect when we confront them with our social and political statements.
The ceiling lights are pointed directly to the walls which draws focus to the art work which we were looking for.

Seeing as our walls would be mirrored, as the guests sign the guestbook afterwards, they would see a reflection of themselves, hopefully a thoughtful experience after viewing the exhibition.

Exhibition research

Below are examples of political exhibitions that I found.

In this exhibition the viewers are directly involved in the work as they have to unveil it themselves t be ale to see the work. This adds an element of mystery to the work as initially they are just black squares, making the viewers more intrigued by the content beneath. Also by involving the audience it make the work appear more personal like it it something that is confronting them. This is the type of reaction that I think we should try and create in our exhibition.

In this political exhibition the have written statements on placards and displayed them alongside the work. This gives of a very powerful and political vibe as placards are used during political protests and are intended to put a point across. This is a technique that could work in our exhibition. All of our work has the same overall theme of waste but none of the collections are making the same point they are all have different points being made. By using placards we would be able to put across the variety of messages that we are tying to put forward through our work in a clear and profound way.

Our project is based on 'Waste' which toilet role inevitably is and this is the first actor that drew my eye to the work shown above. I made me think that it could be an idea to present our work in a disposable way that the viewers could also get involved it. We could print our images ono some sort of ripping paper or even toilet role and present it in the same way as above which is mimicking a toilet role and holder. The audience could rip off squares making them involved in the work making t more personal to them hopefully giving the impression that the message is one intended for them personally. The toilet roles will make the work disposable which reinforces the idea of waste weather it is culture, food etc.

Alternatively we could use this idea but in the actual toilets that are at the venue. Instead of having the or images printed onto

Here I was looking at the idea of seating. by having eating facing the work it encourages the viewers to sit and be confronted by the images. This could also be something that could work with our social/political theme.

Mirror house idea

We were inspired by the reflective floor at The Nucleus Art Gallery. Our work is about confronting society with the social and political statements with our work and making the audience self reflect on how they live. We have decided that the way that we wish to achieve this is by creating a house of mirror style exhibition. This will force the viewer to see themselves at all times during our gallery experience as well as the work

Yayoi Kusama

Tate modern 2012

We visited Yayoi Kusama’s exhibition at the Tate and it inspired us to incorporate mirrors in our exhibition space in order to create a distorted space and almost transport the viewer into a completely different state, which would hopefully make it and the images they see more memorable.

Mirrors and Image Layout

Although We have decided that we definitely want to use mirror to reflect the work and the viewers, we are not yet sure on how to lay the images out to create the best effect using the reflections.
