 London Riots:

The London riots occurred between the 6th and 10th August 2011. The incident started after an uproar about the shooting of Mark Duggan on the 4th. Duggan was shot by a police officer and the media originally reported that he had been armed. His friends protested this claim and it was later revealed that a gun was apparently found at the scene, but the police admitted the Duggan did not open fire.

On the 6th a peaceful protest was held by Duggans friends and family in Tottenham, where the shooting had taken place. This escalated by the evening when people turned up with weapons.

No one predicted that this would lead to widespread rioting, looting and arson across England for the next 4 days. An estimated £200 million worth of property damage was caused and over 3000 were arrested were made. This lead to a swell in the jail population.

The story of three men that were killed in Birmingham became a widely reported incident across the country. Haroon Jahan and brothers Shazad Ali and Abdul Musavir aged between 21 and 31 were hit by a car during the riots whilst trying to protect their property. There were many stories reported of bravery where individuals and even whole communities stood up to the rioters. Many were attacked or threatened but very few were killed which made this story of keen interest to the public. The family thanked the everyone for their calm reaction to the death of there sons.

It had become apparent that the riots were no longer a reaction to Mark Duggans death but had become reckless and unnecessary violence and destruction.

I have chosen to 2011 riots to bas my 'objects' project on as it was a very recent and horrific event that I feel effected everyone throughout the country. Through my photographs I would like to be able to portray a 'broken Britain' as a country that on the surface seemed strong and progressed and yet could suddenly fall apart and become uncontrollable within a matter of hours.
